Ying Wang
An award-winning filmmaker, Ying has traveled widely with her camera. As a migrant navigating between cultures, she is drawn to stories that probe the complexities of humanity and question accepted narratives. Her newly completed feature documentary, The Border (2026), stands as a pivotal expression of this inquiry, a meditative reflection on boundaries and the enduring resilience and interconnectedness of human lives.
Her critically acclaimed feature documentary The World is Bright has garnered multiple international awards, including the Sea to Sky Award at the Vancouver International Film Festival (2019) and the Emerging Canadian Filmmaker Award at Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival (2020), and was nominated for two Canadian Screen Awards in 2021.
Her other notable works include Tricks on the Dead: The Story of Chinese Labour Corps in WWI, on which she served as co-producer and assistant director. This Canada-China-France co-production won two 2016 Canadian Screen Awards and the 2015 Vancouver International Film Festival Audience Must See Award.
Alongside her work as a filmmaker, Ying is an active advocate for the arts. In 2007, she
co-founded Cinevolution Media Arts Society in Canada, a grassroots, migrant-led organization presenting innovative works from Asian diaspora and artists across the Pan-Asian region. She also serves as a founding member and board director of RESO (Racial Equity Screen Office), advancing cross-territory collaboration in film production and distribution within today’s interconnected digital landscape.

Lynn Chen
Lynn Chen is a cultural connector and arts advocate with over a decade of experience in community-based arts programming, intercultural dialogue, and public engagement. She currently serves as Program Coordinator at the Vancouver Art Gallery and is a member of the Centre for Global Asias (CGA)—the renamed and expanded iteration of the Gallery’s Institute of Asian Art (IAA), a research and public engagement platform established in 2014 with the involvement of Shengtian Zheng, dedicated to amplifying Asian and diasporic voices through exhibitions, public programs, and educational initiatives.
A graduate of Emily Carr University of Art + Design (Communication Design), with a Project Management certificate from UBC Sauder School of Business, Lynn has developed vibrant programming at the Vancouver Art Gallery—from Art Party and symposia to artist talks, performances, film screenings, and community collaborations. She is the co-founder of Cinevolution Media Arts Society, where she served as Artistic Director (2014–2016), and currently sits on the boards of Richmond Art Gallery and VIVO Media Arts Centre.
Lynn’s involvement in this documentary stems from a decade-long relationship with Zheng—as colleagues, mentor and mentee, and collaborators, including her work assisting him in digitizing his extensive personal archives. This experience has given her profound insight into Zheng’s life and the depth of the history he carries, while also shaping her understanding of the dynamic between art, society, and cultural responsibility.
At a time when voices like Zheng’s are increasingly rare, Lynn sees preserving his legacy and sharing it with a wider audience as both a personal mission and a professional calling. As co-producer and co-writer of this documentary, she brings her expertise in managing complex, multi-stakeholder cultural projects, along with her intimate knowledge of Zheng’s archive and story, to the filmmaking process—aiming not only to bring his life to the screen, but also to continue his lifelong pursuit of bridging cultures and enriching public discourse through art.
